Summary
The discovery of Costa Rica dates back five hundred years ago to the year 1502, when Christopher Columbus was on his fourth voyage to the New World and stumbled upon this exotic land (). The land was primarily inhabited by indigenous people, but after disease, slavery, poverty, and battles, the indigenous people greatly decreased in population and lost control of the land to the Spaniards. In 1821, Costa Rica gained independence from Spain and then joined the Mexican Empire that eventually crashed (). It wasn’t until 1838 that Costa Rica had truly become an independent country (). From 1849 to 1859, Juan Rafael Mora led the fight against William Walker, an American who tried to take control of the region (). About a century later, in 1949, a new constitution was adopted after a brutal and bloody 44-day civil war and peace was a general outcome. A ground-breaking moment in Costa Rican history as well as Western civilization history was in 2010 when Laura Chinchilla became the first female president of the country (). All in all, Costa Rica has had many ground-breaking turning points in its history that have improved their county’s functionality socially, politically, and much more.
